Cruiser «Aurora»

The Russia’s most famous cruiser could have been named Polkan or Psyche, but Nikolay II chose the last name in the list – Avrora (Aurora) in honor of the dawn goddess in the Roman mythology. Over the period of its service, the legendary ship covered over 100 thousand miles, took part in three wars, underwent several refurbishments and repairs. Today, the vessel is a “must see”, along with other places of interests of St. Petersburg, such as the bridges and the lions.

The Peter and Paul Cathedral

The oldest architectural monument of the city was founded according to the plan of Peter I on the Zayachy Island on May 27, 1703 to protect the city from the Swedes during the Great Northern War. The date of the fortress foundation is considered to be the date of foundation of St. Petersburg. The Peter and Paul Cathedral, the main object of the Peter and Paul Fortress, is the family vault of the Russian emperors.

The world’s second largest museum with more than 3,000,000 exhibits from the Stone Age till now, was founded in 1764 as a private collection of Catherine II. Cats, among others, take care of the pieces of art here. The founder of the museum ordered to bring cat there almost 300 years ago. Today, the Winter Palace is a home for about 50 cats.
